Lower Section
This is the Ohakune end of the road.
As you climb enjoy the view across the Waimarino Plain, which was covered with bush till the timber was milled.
Near the top, the road leaves the farmland and enters Tongariro National Park and winds its way through the bush to the old gate post at the boundary of the old 1908 railway alignment.
The railway route between Ohakune and Horopito was straightened and electrified in 1987.
At the old gate post a new track leaves the coach road and goes to the bypassed railway tunnel, and the two Hapuawhenua Viaducts.

In The Tunnel
From the Hapuawhenua Viaducts you can return to Ohakune the same way, or follow the new track to rejoin the Ohakune Coach Road and continue along the Skyline section to the Taonui Viaduct and Horopito.
