Horopito

The government plan was to make Horopito the main town in this region and so the town was surveyed and an auction of sections was held on July 24th 1907.

The Free Lance newspaper carried the following advertisement.

Great Auction Sale of the town of Horopito on the Grand Trunk Railway. The town of Horopito is the natural centre of the Great Waimarino forest.

The new freehold town of Horopito ..........has an area of one hundred and forty acres of the finest land in the colony.

The land is flat and the soil a chocolate loam. For fully half a century the Town of Horopito must be one of the great sawmilling and dairying centres of the colony.
Seventy eight sections of varying sizes in all were up for auction.
